During the press conference held this morning at the Cornèr Arena, HCL reviewed the growth of its Youth Section, which today has 403 registered boys and girls, over the last ten years.
A growth that involves the sports sector with 46 players trained in the youth academy who have worn or wear the jerseys of National League or Swiss League teams, one player (Merzlikins) landing in the NHL, competing in three U20 Elite playoff finals, and the training of six coaches (Gianinazzi, Cantoni, Conne, Fischer, Wohlwend, and Hirschi) who have joined prestigious technical staffs.
A growth that also embraces the increasingly close relationships with the educational world, particularly with the introduction of the sports middle school in Canobbio, and the financial sector with the Youth Section, which, thanks also to the essential support of the HC Lugano Academy Foundation, its sponsors, and the tireless work of its 120 volunteers, has now reached the ambitious goal of economic independence from Hockey Club Lugano SA, which manages the first team's activities.
Regarding the organization and the distribution of technical and operational responsibilities, the start of the 2024/25 season will mark the completion of the handover after twelve seasons from Marco Werder to Alessandro Chiesa in the role of Head of Junior Department. Alessandro Chiesa will report directly to the organization's CEO, Marco Werder.
A handover at the helm of the youth academy that is lighter today, knowing that Alessandro Chiesa, a pillar of Lugano who wore the captain's C for four seasons, perfectly identifies with the values, vision, and mission of Hockey Club Lugano.
"I thank the club for the trust they have given me," said Alessandro Chiesa, "which I felt since I started thinking about my post-career. I joined a well-structured organization tailored to young people. Among the various tasks, my focus will be on recruitment with the aim of increasing the number of boys while maintaining quality. In this sense, the future training center in Sigirino represents a great opportunity."
