The Hockey Club Lugano announces that it has reached an agreement valid until the end of the 2024/25 season with 54-year-old Finnish coach Antti Törmänen, who will serve as the Senior Advisor for the first team's coaching staff and the Youth Section.
After a stellar career as a player (50 NHL games, 476 Liiga games, four World Championships including a gold medal in 1995, and an Olympic appearance), Törmänen transitioned to coaching in 2007, splitting his time between Finland and Switzerland.
In Switzerland, he served as head coach of SC Bern from 2011 to 2014, winning the national title in 2013. From 2017 to 2023, he was head coach of EHC Biel-Bienne. During his tenure with Biel, a battle with cancer forced him to take a break between August 2020 and July 2021, and later to step back during the 2023 playoffs while his team reached the finals, eventually losing in Game 7.
In his role, Törmänen will act as a mentor and advisor, supporting Luca Gianinazzi and his assistants while sharing his extensive hockey knowledge and life experience with the club.
Hnat Domenichelli, General Manager of HCL, stated: "I want to welcome Antti to Lugano for this new role. After meeting him and his family, it became clear that he is the right person for this position. He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will benefit our coaches, players, and the entire organization."
Antti Törmänen added: "I am thrilled to join Lugano as a senior advisor and grateful for this great opportunity to share my hockey expertise with the coaches, players, and the entire organization. I am truly inspired by this role as a third career in hockey, following my time as a player and coach."
