The Ticinonews Sport broadcast addressed the topic of the future of the Bellinzona Rockets team in its edition of January 9, 2024, hosting the president of the club, Matteo Mozzini, and the sports director, Nicola Pini.
In this regard, Hockey Club Lugano confirms that it was contacted in December 2023 by the management of the Bellinzona Rockets, who outlined the various scenarios regarding the future of the project starting from the 2024/25 season, agreeing to provide a response by mid-January.
After discussing the matter internally, HCL has decided not to change its position on the subject of a Ticino team in the Swiss League, a stance that was publicly expressed last spring.
HCL thus maintains the strategic decision to focus on youth development through significant investments in its Youth Section.
The black-and-white club will continue to develop its best prospects close to the first-team level, utilizing its own facilities, specific training, and the experience of its coaches, and also benefiting from the National League regulation that allows four under-22 players to be fielded in the U20 Elite championship.
In the case of under-22 players under contract with HCL for whom it is considered preferable to play in a Swiss League team for their development, a solution will be found on a case-by-case basis.
In general terms, according to Hockey Club Lugano, the recent transition of the project from Ticino Rockets to Bellinzona Rockets has not changed the sporting essence and the overall situation.
HCL reiterates in particular that, in its opinion, there are not enough young players in our Canton to support two National League teams, one Swiss League team, two teams participating in the U20 Elite championship, and an additional team for the MyHockey League.
