In 2022, Hockey Club Lugano ventured into the world of eSports, founding the first eSports team of the club. Our focus is on the EA Sports' ice hockey simulation "NHL," with two dynamic teams: HC Lugano eSports and HC Lugano eSports Academy. These teams compete in various European leagues, bringing our passion for ice hockey into the virtual realm.
Our goal is to harness the growing enthusiasm for eSports, connecting a young, tech-savvy audience with the world of ice hockey. Virtual hockey mirrors real hockey, allowing both players and spectators to experience moments akin to those on real ice.
An eSports team must consist of at least 1 goalie, 2 defensemen, and 3 forwards, reflecting real-life formations. Each player plays a crucial role, and their synergy is essential for success on the digital ice. The Hockey Club Lugano eSports teams compete against the best teams in Europe, including several other Swiss teams, bringing the pride of Lugano into the virtual world.
The championship is structured as follows: the clubs compete in a classic first part of the Regular Season (where everyone plays against everyone), then the top six teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while the other teams face the Pre-Playoffs (in two groups). Subsequently, the winners advance to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals.
