During the eighth edition of the Gala Dinner promoted by the Golden Wings Club and the HC Lugano Academy Foundation to raise funds for the Bianconeri Youth Section, Hockey Club Lugano proudly announced the return of forward Lorenzo Canonica from North America. Canonica has signed a two-year contract with HCL, valid for the 2023/24 and 2024/25 seasons.

Born on September 3, 2003, in Lugano, Lorenzo (center "left," 181 cm x 87 kg) started playing hockey at the age of six and has worn the Bianconeri jersey in all age categories up until the 2020/21 season, when he embarked on his North American adventure.

As one of the key players during two splendid seasons with the U20 Elit, where only the pandemic denied the team, then coached by Luca Gianinazzi, a real chance to win the national title, Canonica also made his debut with HCL's first team as a 16-year-old during the 2019/20 season.

Over the past three years, Lorenzo has played for the Shawinigan Cataractes in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), one of the three most prestigious junior leagues in the world, amassing 138 games and 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) and, most notably, winning the league championship in the 2021/22 season and competing in the Memorial Cup, which crowns the best junior team in North America.

With the Swiss National Team, Canonica has participated in two U20 World Championships, the most recent being in Canada over the Christmas and New Year period, where he was selected as one of the top three players on the Swiss team.

Hockey Club Lugano is particularly proud to welcome back a golden boy and a motivated, talented player who has developed step by step within its Youth Section as he begins his professional career.
