Hockey Club Lugano officially announces the signing of Swedish forward Mario Kempe, center-winger "left", born on 19.09.1988 in Kramfors (183 cm x 86 kg), with a contract valid until the end of the 2023/24 season.
A former Swedish U18 and U20 national player, Kempe was drafted in the fifth round by the Philadelphia Flyers in 2007.
After two seasons in the QMJHL, he spent the first part of his career in his homeland with Rögle, Djurgardens, and Modo Hockey.
From 2014 to 2022, Kempe alternated between the KHL (279 games, 144 points) with Vityaz Podolsk, CSKA Moscow, and Dynamo Minsk, and seasons in North America where he played 70 NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes and 90 AHL games with the Tucson Roadrunners and Ontario Reign.
In the 2022/23 season and the first part of this season, he returned to Sweden where he played for Lülea.
Kempe has played in two World Championships (2019 and 2021) as well as 42 official matches with the Swedish national team. In early November 2023, he wore the Tre Kronor jersey at the Karjala Cup, scoring three goals (one against Switzerland) and providing an assist.
If the bureaucratic process for the international transfer of the player goes smoothly, Kempe, who will train with the team tomorrow morning along with Aleksi Peltonen, could be available to the coaching staff for Sunday's game against Zug.
